Dust on the matte screen. When i look through my viewfinder, it is down at the bottom of the photo.
Dust In Viewfinder But Not In Picture. Dust particles will always appear in the same spots. Hi all i own a d5100 for less than two months (i did change lens couple of times), and i just noticed yesterday that there's a spot in my viewfinder.
When i look through my viewfinder, it is down at the bottom of the photo. Its very important to remember that the sensor has to be completely dust/oil free, if its not, then it will show up in the images. Dust particles will always appear in the same spots.
Dust in viewfinder is a common thing and does not affect picture quality.
Self cleaning may work, but especially beginners often make it worse or damage the matte screen. So any speck you see through the viewfinder is not on the sensor. When you look through the viewfinder you are looking through a focusing screen, a mirror and out the lens. Discussion in 'nikon' started by k_stanulis, jul 13, 2007.

Dust on the matte screen.
Any dust and specks you can see in the viewfinder are not on the sensor if your images 'specks' free then there is no dust (yet) on the sensor ~ as noted above by samsen, take a picture of a bright uniform blue sky at say f22 but as part of that process first focus on something close like a wall then switch the lens to mf point the camera at the sky and take the picture. Larger dust particles and hair can be visible right away without having to zoom in (see example image below). It's only visible when looking carefully into the viewfinder and you can see a few tiny black spots on the edges of the viewfinder screen. As for the viewfinder in both my bodies, if i really wanted, i could grow a healthy crop of potatoes with the amount of dust that has taken up residence there.

You are actually doing more harm than good, chances are, you are blowing more specs of dusts into the viewfinder. Just a black little blob. But if its in the viewfinder system it doesn't affect the images. Here is an example of sensor dust:
See this answer for a link how you might clean it. I took my lens off, and it still appears, so i know it is isolated to the camera body.
